An eccentrically swish –designed bar. Expect the unexpected here, and by that I mean...goldfishes swimming under your foot path. This place can be perceived as either slick or cheesy. But, whatever your take on Velvet you can't dismiss this added bonus a TV in the loo - perfect if ever a date is to go wrong!

Emma said on 07th July ... "I have eaten at Velvet a couple of times, and on both occasions the food was OK, but the service was rubbish. We had to ask for our bill about three times on each visit, and it was really hard to get the attention of the waiters /waitresses.

They do some good offers on the food, and the menu has a nice selection, but those are pretty much the only good points.

Also, on our second visit, my partners steak (supposedly medium) was rare to the point of being blue! It took so long to get the attention of the waitress that I'd finished my meal already so we couldn't be bothered sending it back. Not good!

It's a shame, because we used to eat at the Velvet in Leeds all the time when it was open, and the food / service was always brilliant."

Have been going to velvet of 5 years but it has went downhill. Not going back. "

James said on 21st January ... "Every time I have eaten at Velvet, the experience is invariably the same. The food is very good with excellent sized portions which are very tasty. It is the staff which seem to be a bit of a let down, particularly the front of house management. The time taken for a menu to arrive or a drinks order to be taken is so frustrating. If all the tables had been full then I could understand this but the place has been almost empty and it's still all so slow and impersonal. I once witnessed a customer knock a glass of wine onto the floor. All the staff looked towards her but not one of them got out from the behind the bar to take over a cloth or replace the glass. We once had to ask for the bill 4 times over a 20 minute period and they only brought it over as we about to walk up the stairs!

I find this a pity as the venue is a nice place to be and a stylish asset to the village as a whole...

The whole team of staff are excellent, very relaxed and friendly. They even let me do a photoshoot in there recently, using their superb in-stair recessed aqaurium as a prop!

A must for anyone dining in Manchester, all are made to feel totally welcome at Velvet!"

Our next visit is at the end of this month and I am sure it will be a very enjoyable one!!"

Suzie said on 08th June ... "Both me and my partner ordered the roast chicken. Beware. What came was quite shocking! A entire bird on a plate. I'm a fan of rustic home cooking like anyone else - but this was ridiculous. Infact there was so much chicken on the plate - I felt ill looking at it.

There was no thought. I may have well gone down to Asda bought a cooked chicken in a bag - plonked it on a plate - hey presto - I'm a chef! I'm so glad we didn't sit outside - I would have been mortified. What a waste of food! Not everyone wants to look like a caveman waving half a chicken around! It was grotesquely prepared with no thought.

Prehistoric caveman cookery at its best!!! I felt traumatised when I left. "

There are many places in Manchester that overcharge and overhype so Velvet puts every one of them in the shade. I must also mention the interior, the goldfish and QVC in the loos, tongue in cheek and classy at the same time.

Tim White said on 21st March ... "I would like to start with praising the service and the attitude of the staff at Velvet, my partner and I have both had many years in the catering trade so we are well use to moaning customers, And I do not want to come across as one of them.

As most people in the catering trade tend to put up with more than the average Joe public, I very rarely have cause to complain, my partner would not let voice my concerns on the night ( Friday 24/06/05 ) due to the reasons I have stated already including the fact that the service was very good, my comments are the salmon starter could cause a major blockage to the your arteries with the amount of butter holding the salmon terrine together, and the main course of fillet steak was not quite what I expected, the steak was quite stringy though cooked perfect, but the thing that did not impress me was the sauce it did not resemble what was promised on the menu to mention one thing button mushrooms were promised and what I received was a single thin slice, the sauce let the meal down and the mash was not what I expected also, it appeared to be crushed potatoes with cabbage thrown in maybe this is the new way of doing colcannon but its final result was to come out quite dry.

And FINALLY after saying I would not moan too much, it was the desert that finally finished it off, it was a chocolate terrine, again it did not resemble what was promised on the menu, no cherry sauce was visible on the plate and it did not look attractive at all.

I did want to say something on the night, but as my partner really did not want me to do so I did as she wished, A bill of ? 42.00 might not be a fortune to some people but it does to others.

My email is late in coming due to a hectic work load and a three year old daughter, my comments are that I took a lot of time on the internet to find a restaurant that day and Velvets web page menus etc really promised a lot, and as I cannot state enough the staff and the service given was of a high quality which was the only plus.""
