Profile information

I think Manchester is one of the best places in the UK and tend to scowl at people who think otherwise.

I like going to gigs and having a couple of pints and geeky things like libraries and silly sci-fi programmes. I also like having a nice cup of tea and a sit down, especially if it involves biscuits.

A cross between your Grandma's living room and a school canteen, Mod Pop Cafe is located in the trendy Northern Quarter below the shrine to all things retro and kitsch, Pop Boutique. Its formica tables and peeling seventies-style wallpaper don't create the cosiest of surroundings but at least it maintains some continuity with the shop above. It's reasonably priced and staff are welcoming which makes up for the veggie cuisine it serves, which although wholesome, is a little unexciting and tasteless.

Nestled amongst the shops and bars of the Northern Quarter, Nexus is a haven of tranquillity. Follow a flight of stairs down to a surprisingly bright and airy basement space where the food is wholesome, good value for money and ideal for a bit of comfort-eating. You can absorb the calming atmosphere whilst indulging in a filling pie or a light snack of bagels washed down with a variety of fair-trade tea. Aiming to provide a meeting place for local artists, Nexus also puts on film nights, art exhibitions and life-drawing classes so you can feed your soul as well as your stomach.

Nexus is open 10am-7pm daily

Font Bar

Tucked away off oxford road, the prime attraction of Font Bar is its fabulously cheap £2 cocktails. There's a wide selection on offer from the classic Black Russian to the indulgent Mudslide, competently made by efficient and friendly bar staff. Font is usually heaving on weekends and the clientele's primarily students. However, it's still a pretty cosy and relaxed place to knock back a few drinks on a Friday night before heading off to a club.
