The Railway

Another one of the Joseph Holt lot, the Railway upholds their fine tradition with all their own ales at reasonable prices, accompanied by their own lagers, Crystal and Diamond, both in my opinion much better than the standard offereings and much cheaper too.The bar also upholds the traditional bare wood decor of its sister bars, except the Railway has the inclusion of a slight modern facelift in terms of the exterior; the front of the pub is painted black with a large fishbowl window for gawking punters.Being a suburban version of the Ape and Apple, the clientele are vastly different, specifically with the pub being based in West Didsbury, this means that the majority of customers are largely younger. In order to cater to this younger set they hold open mic acoustic nights for aspiring musicians and hold a quiz night every Tues night for those who want a more interactive experience.A very friendly local that attracts all kinds of people to its doors, a fantastic place for beer and after-work ranting.

The Pub

This is the local for pretty much every student who attends Manchester Metropolitan University. Lurking just off Oxford Road, and cunningly situated right next door to where most students will take their exams, this bar soaks up most of the student traffic without many of them even thinking about it.The Pub isn't a bad little pub though, its a fairly large space, with a number of smaller rooms leading off from the main section in which you can identify the plaintive cries of students banging on about some loan crisis or how they can get an extension so they can stay down the pub longer... The drinks themselves are as you'd expect, VERY cheap. Some just skipping over the ???1 mark during happy hour (university quitting time), so you can overlook the fact that they just stock the bare essential, generic stock of alcohol. The food is also worth checking out and, again, is very cheap. I can particularly recommend the steak and red-onion sandwich, cheap, simple but good quality fare. This is basically student heaven, slightly grubby but otherwise decent little pub to while away your lunch hour or study periods.

The Moon Under Water

The Moon Under Water is a little more than a typical Wetherspoons pub, but not by too far a stretch. Basically its just bigger, quite a lot bigger in fact than many of its contemporaries. Said to be one of the biggest pubs in Europe, it extends passed where you at first believe it to end and spills over into a huge vaulted room complete with upstairs balconies ringing the room. This space does make the pub better insofar as it means there is a natural filter involved so you're not shoulder to shoulder with the usual scrags that come attracted to the cheap Wetherspoons beer prices. Although there is a certain charm about this pub, it still always seems just a little bit filthy. Maybe its simply due to the size of the place which means they can't get around the whole pub to make sure its tidy...Otherwise, this isn't a bad after-shopping venue, its cheap and cheerful, with an ever expanding range of beers. Having just grasped onto Manchesters fascination with imported beers and ales their stock has soared, however the Moon Under Water has managed to keep the prices of these 'trendy drinks' down, so if you appreciate the beer more than the ambience then it makes this pub a worthwhile place to visit.

The Green Room

Situated in the southern end of the city toward Manchester's trendy Deansgate locks development there lies a very different kind of late bar. Nestled snugly in the railway arch beneath Oxford Road station, the simply titled, greenroom, has for the last 23 years provided a platform for up and coming artists, poets and dance troupes, in fact anything you care to venture a guess at has surely been given its time here. The most notable evening for a night out to my mind is the Green Bohemia night, which is basically a free night of acoustic music, and of the nights I've attended the acts have been consistently good. The bar is spartan and minimalist after the fashion of 20th Century arts centres everywhere, clear and uncluttered with the bare showing of metal and exposed brickwork. It works well at nighttime with the giant fishbowl window overlooking Whitworth St.This is a great venue to visit if you have an open mind and is worth it to experience something new or out of the ordinary. The many plays that go on show here are always worth watching, despite how bizarre the initial premise seems to be...

The English Lounge

The English Lounge is really a perfect Sunday pub. It boasts one of the most relaxing spaces to sit back and enjoy a few quiet drinks with a few friends. I???m never quite sure how they manage it but this pub never seems to get any more full than is comfortable, and that???s not to say that its not a popular place, it just seems to attract the kind of drinking folk that just settle in for a couple and move on. For that reason the English Lounge makes for a fairly impressive first-date pub, its subdued colours, candles and relaxed atmosphere seem to work wonders for those first-date nerves??? Or so I???m told???A main pulling point (if you???ll forgive the pun) has to be the restaurant, they have recently renovated the upstairs of the building to accommodate a dedicated eating area where they serve excellent quality food, specifically the Sunday Lunch, which is a personal fave. Although everything I have tried here seems to be of exceptional quality. In addition to this they have a wide assortment of beers and wines to cater for all tastes, the usual hipster imported lines as well as the regular lagers along with enough bitters to keep the serious drinker happy. Again, another one of those rare pubs that have avoided the ravages of the *cool* Manchester scene and clearly not one to be missed whatever your intentions???

The Salisbury

Sort of the opposite of chavtastic really, this pub is sat lurking just behind fellow rockers pub, The Grand Central. Only the Salisbury tends to cater for rockers of the older variety; after the Grand Central has cast them out to pasture, they all seem to converge here. Many bikers frequent this pub, but you shouldn't let that put you off if you like your rock music. The jukebox caters to all known alternative/ rock styles from Ozzy through to Pavement and is cheap enough to have a rummage through a few tracks. Beware however, it seems they aren't huge fans of Morrisey, as they tend to fade out 'How Soon is Now' after a minute or two... I guess he does go on a bit sometimes though..The Salisbury is much less scruffy looking than its more metal oriented neighbour, but it still has a certain scuzzy quality which will make all the rockers feel just that little more cosy. The prices are just about average for a city centre pub, not too steep, but not too cheap. Many people do come here for the Jilly's Rockworld warm-up, but there are always a few stragglers clinging onto the bars late-license. The bar also boasts a rarity for city pubs nowadays, a pool table! Although its taken away of a weekend to make space for anybody who wants to air guitar to Sabbath...In short, a classy bar.

Tiger Lounge

The poor cousin of the Fab Cafe, Tiger Lounge seems to pick up the more filthier form of Kitsch. Adorned with fuzzy Tiger Print the decoration looks like it was cobbled togetrher just a little bit too hastily. In some places you can see the tape hanging it to the wall. The whole bar is dim and has the overall feel of just being a bit... um, sticky. It's not so bad if you're a survivor of pretty much any other student bar in the world ever, but if that low-key element isn't something you can cope with then this may not be your place. The DJ's do their best to inject some life into the venue, playing a variety of rock/ alternative and soulful tunes depending on the night you choose to frequent the establishment, but the sound system is a little muffled and does counter their atempts somewhat. In all, Tiger Lounge just doesn't look like it was ever finished, like its a mash of ideas that were never fully followed through with. While Fab Cafe was spared no expense on its decor, the owners look like they came up a bit short by the time Tiger Lounge was born. It does host the odd free gig to draw in the punters however, and this seems to be the bars saving grace as some good names pass through here that just up the road you could be paying up to ???10 to see the same band play. Other than this generosity it only really makes a worthwhile place to visit for a cheap after work drink when you're floundering before payday.

The Dog and Partridge

This is one of my favorite pubs in Didsbury, and one that looks out as something of a landmark in the centre of Didsbury Village. The Dog and Partridge is a large, dominating old building near the clock tower in the village's centre. The inside mirrors the exterior in that it holds the same traditional dimmed lighting and smokey wooden look that these suburban pubs tend to hold. The place is always a friendly place to stop by, always lively, sometimes excessively so, especially on the weekends or when there's sport on telly. As a Cask Marque accredited pub the bar stocks many good quality ales as well as Budweiser on tap. There's really not much special about this pub, just like a Ronseal ad, 'it does exactly what it says on the tin', or in this case it simply is what it is, a decent, friendly little locals pub that always makes a top place to stop and chill for a pint or two.

Odd Bar

This is a literal blend of styles from across the world and from random people's nik-nak collections. The brainchild of Cleo Fornam, she has stated that she wanted to blend all of the places that she had visited on her travels into one bar to create the ultimate space to chill out in. Blending Moroccan and Indian themes into the decor the bar has a warm feel, transmitted by all the deep reds and big cusions draped over the corner sofas. To further keep the clientele feeling at home Cleo has come up with the novel idea of decorating the place with people's collectables, kitsch souvenirs of her own and generous donations from others. Amongst this collection is a smattering of Betty Page posters, a golden cupid and a furry moose head (?). Tacky though this sounds, the space still manages to look organised and artful in the way that many of the newer Northern Quarter bars are aspiring to. A welcome, eclectic addition to this developing area.

The Fab Cafe

Fab Cafe is a quirky Sci Fi theme bar for those of you out there still living in a world populated by Fraggles and Dr Who. Showing endless DVD's throughout the day of kids classics TV such as the aforementioned along with many cult 80's/ 90's film and cartoon classics along with a smattering of older B-movies, this is a great place to visit for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.Upon entry you are almost literally greeted at the door by the Creature from the Black Lagoon, as a 'life-sized' likeness of it stands ominously in the swirling retro lighting effects of the pub. I've seen many a patron with maybe one pint more than their comfortable level falling foul of this lurking facsimile. Other to this there is a life sized replica of the Alien guarding the DJ booth, while all around the bar are glass cases stuffed with old stuff you probably hoarded as a kid; Beano comics, Thunderbirds toys, you name it, if it's geeky and retro enough it's in there somewhere.Due to the nature of the bar, the clientele is mixed between the student crowd and the assorted twenty-somethings out to pontificate on their youth, but also there are a fair number of older customers who choose to spend their evenings here catching up on their film of choice or listening to the Kitsch music while bogling away on the 70's styled dancefloor. This is a cheap and cheerful little venue, always a fun place to visit and especially to talk nonsense about who would win in a fight between Super Ted and He-man, I mean come on, Super Ted could *fly*...
